Terminology
Define the alias, routing, and Cloudflare terms that appear throughout the Mailmask documentation.
Alias
An address on the base domain, such as velvet-harbor-42@mail.example.com, that forwards to one destination. An alias can carry a label, an expiry, and sender rules, and can be disabled without being deleted.
API Token
The Cloudflare credential the CLI uses to deploy. It needs Workers Scripts Edit and Email Routing Addresses Edit on the account, plus Email Routing Rules Edit on the zone.
Base Domain
The domain or subdomain whose Email Routing catch-all points at the Worker, such as mail.example.com. Every alias lives on it, and mail for any other domain is rejected.
Catch-All
The Email Routing rule that sends every address without an explicit rule to the Worker. Deploy points it at the Worker so new aliases work without creating a rule for each one.
Cloudflare Email Routing
The Cloudflare service that receives mail for your domain and hands it to the Worker. You enable it once in the dashboard, which adds the required MX and SPF records.
Config
The config.json file that holds your destinations, aliases, and settings. The CLI reads and writes it, and deploy ships it to the Worker.
Destination
A real inbox that aliases forward to. Each destination must be verified in Cloudflare Email Routing before mail can reach it.
Refusal
Mail that a known alias turns away because it is disabled, expired, or the sender does not match its rules. A refusal is rejected or dropped, never forwarded to a default destination.
Sender Rule
An entry in an alias's allow or block list. It is either a full address (news@shop.com) or a domain wildcard (*@shop.com).
Subaddressing
Treating alias+tag@domain as alias@domain. It lets you tag one alias per purpose without creating new ones.
Unknown Alias Action
What happens to mail for an address that is not an alias: reject (bounce), drop silently, or forward to a default destination. It is set with the unknown_alias_action setting.
Worker
The Cloudflare Worker deployed to your account that routes every inbound message. It forwards, rejects, or drops mail in memory and never stores it.
